A “Launch Forth” Competition Entry
TraK: An all-terrain, mobile assist chariot designed to allow individuals to live a more versatile outdoor lifestyle, beyond the boundaries of infrastructure. With the overarching goal of breaking the stigma of the traditional wheel chair, TraK is geared toward changing the perception from something one must use to something one wants to use.
The design is driven by two large ¾ hP motors with a gyro stabilizing unit, and enough battery storage to handle continuous use over a full day without additional charging. The device can recoup energy on downhill terrain with regenerative braking, and has additional charging capabilities through a rowing motion integrated into the adjustable arm rests.
The dual-track concept allows users to maneuver uneven terrain that normally poses significant challenges for a traditional wheel chair, tackling obstacles such as sand, roots, rocks, or grassy, muddy and generally rough terrain. With the self-stabilizing system, the operator can even traverse short flights of stairs or bypass stairs altogether by traveling over surrounding areas. The system is designed to self-adjust, optimizing the seat, backrest, arm, and footrest positions to better balance the user’s center of gravity.
Many of the TraK’s custom brackets and mechanical components are designed specifically for metal additive manufacturing. Some of the key components can be nested in place to optimize time and efficiency for SLS machine build platform. Long term many of these parts could be further customized for lower cost, high volume casting.
So many people are confined to a chair for all or most of their lives, while their devices are designed only for formatted urban environments, and much of our aging infrastructure is still lagging in ADA accessibility. TraK is the evolution of our approach to mobility; changing the perception and life style for those individuals incapable of walking.
